Windows 8 è disponibile al pubblico in versione Consumer Preview, ovvero una beta pubblica. La versione è features complete, questo significa che la successive versioni saranno solo più stabili e non avranno nuove applicazioni.
Contestualmente alla versione client è stata rilasciata la versione server, che introduce molte novità soprattutto in chiave cloud. Il rilascio definitivo è previsto tra Ottobre e Novembre, anche se non è ancora chiaro se ci sarà parallelamente la versione ARM.
